Rangaiah, our great grandfather from Badangod (near Sirsi) migrated to Hiregangoor when he was young. Venkataiah our grand father was a well known ayurvedic pandit, astrologer and an entrepreneur of those times. Venkataiah was married to Puttamma from Asagod (Harihar Taluk). Puttamma was a highly respected lady not only in the community but in and around our village.
Puttamma's culinary talent was well known and it was passed on to her five daughters and to Ambujamma, the only daughter-in-law of Badangod family. i.e our mother. At a very young age of sixteen years I joined the Indian Air Force and hence remained out of home and Karnataka. That is when the deep craving for traditional dishes of Karnataka that too of 'bayalu seeme' started.
Subsequently as I grew up in Air Force career, many an opportunity arose and I was frequently piloting an aeroplane to Bangalore from different parts of country. During such sorties my only aim was to collect the ingredients for a "Kannada adige" like Ragi, Jowar flour, subbasge soppu etc.
People who remain away from Karnataka are the ones who really value our traditional kannada recipes and have a deep nostalgic link to our culinary roots.
This is an effort to reach out to all kannadigas in and out of Karnataka to share our knowledge of the local recipes and pass on to the food lovers.
